Why ‘patience’ is far from what you possess?

Reflecting on this rapidly changing world, I sometimes wonder: Is it possible to remain patient amidst all the haste and pressure?

Time certainly matters and the ability to meet deadlines and targets is essential to achieving success. But attaining this quality of patience is an arduous task in and of itself.

In this article, I will explain why patience is hard to achieve, why it is beneficial, and how to develop it in ourselves. So let me dig in to help you navigate this virtue.

Why It's Hard to Be Patient

In most circumstances, I believe I have a fair amount of patience. I could navigate mild discomfort and tolerate uneasy situations. But, this perception was merely surface-level. A profound realization struck me after reading "13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do" by Amy Morin. It became apparent that genuine patience requires a depth that goes beyond mere tolerance.

I thought I was a patient person.

There are a few reasons why it can be so hard to be patient.

First, we live in a culture that encourages instant gratification, creating the expectation that we should be able to easily acquire whatever we want. (I explain more details on this here: why we expect immediate results.)

Second, overconfidence in our abilities can give us false hope when it comes to mastering something quickly

Lastly, because we sometimes see people achieving overnight success on social media, we may mistakenly believe that this is the norm. And we fall into this mental trap.

The Benefits of Patience

Patience has many benefits - from making better decisions to increasing overall well-being and a sense of gratitude. Patient individuals often outperform those who are always in a rush. Patience allows us to:

  • Make better decisions.

  • Improve our overall well-being.

  • Develop a greater sense of gratitude.

  • Become better versions of ourselves.

How to Develop Patience

If you're not naturally patient, there are a few things you can do to develop this quality:

  1. Accept your current circumstances.

  2. Increase your ability to tolerate uncomfortable situations.

  3. Practice mindfulness.

  4. Set realistic goals.

  5. Celebrate your small successes.

In Conclusion

Patience is a must-have virtue and one of the most important characteristics you can develop. If you have goals to grow and become a better version of yourself, having patience is key. It can be difficult for some, but by making a conscious effort to be more patient, we can strengthen our mental strength.

So next time you're feeling impatient, take a deep breath and remind yourself that good things take time. This will need ditching bad habits and replacing them that will add value to our well-being.
